朝の光に佇む、國王神社｜平将門公 終焉の地｜Kokuō Shrine, the Final Resting Place of Taira no Masakado

兼ねてから訪れたいと思っていた國王神社にやってきました。
「國王神社は、平将門公 終焉の地に静かに佇む古社です。
将門公の三女・如蔵尼が父の最期の地に庵を建てたことが國王神社の創始であり、父の三十三回忌に刻んだ『寄木造 平将門木像』を御神体としています。
また、天慶三年（９４０）に将門軍と朝廷軍が最終決戦を迎えたこの地に神社が建てられました。」

朝の神社には心地よい風があり、木々の隙間から差し込む光が印象的でした。
気持ちがすっきりと整っていくような空気が流れていました。
Hello.
I finally visited Kokuō Shrine, a place I had long wished to see.
“Kokuō Shrine is a historic shrine that quietly stands on the site where Taira no Masakado met his end.
The shrine was founded when Masakado’s third daughter, Nyōzō-ni, built a hermitage at the place of her father’s final moments, and the principal object of worship is a wooden statue of Taira no Masakado carved in the yosegi-zukuri style for the thirty-third memorial anniversary of his death.
Furthermore, this site is where the final battle between Masakado’s forces and the imperial army took place in Tenkei 3 (940), and it is here that the shrine was established.”

In the morning, a pleasant breeze moved through the shrine, and the light filtering through the trees left a strong impression.
The air felt as if it gently cleared and settled the mind.
社務所前の駐車場から正面の鳥居まで歩いてきました。
奥の方まで幡が連なってます。
I walked from the parking area in front of the shrine office to the main torii gate.
Banners line the path all the way toward the inner grounds.
社殿の前から撮影しました。すっきりとした気が感じられます。
この社殿は、県の指定文化財となっています。
I took this photograph from in front of the shrine hall. The air felt clear and refreshing.
This shrine hall is designated as a prefectural cultural property.

拝殿の中には、國王神社の紋章でもある北斗七星を表した提灯が見られます。この紋章は、将門公が用いていたと伝えられています。
参拝後、こちらの御朱印をいただきました。
普段は御朱印を集めていませんが、ここはいつも気軽に訪れられる場所ではないため、記念としていただくことにしました。
Inside the worship hall, lanterns bearing the Big Dipper—also the crest of Kokuō Shrine—can be seen. This emblem is said to have been used by Taira no Masakado.
After offering my prayers, I received this goshuin.
I do not usually collect goshuin, but as this is not a place I can easily visit, I chose to receive one as a keepsake.
年末の境内では、所々で落ち葉が焚き上げられていました。
Toward the end of the year, fallen leaves were quietly being burned here and there within the shrine grounds.
朝早く訪れたこの日は、太陽の光がとても綺麗でした。
I arrived early in the morning that day, and the sunlight was beautifully clear.
訪れる前は、どんな場所なのか少し不安もありましたが、実際にはとても心地よい場所でした。
平将門公は歴史的に知られる人物ですが、そうしたことを意識せずとも、神社の自然や季節の移ろいを感じられる場所だと思います。
次は、同じく平将門公にゆかりのある場所を訪れます。

Before visiting, I felt a little uncertain about what kind of place it would be, but it turned out to be very peaceful and pleasant.
Taira no Masakado is a figure well known in history, yet even without focusing on that background, this is a place where one can simply feel the shrine’s nature and the changing seasons.
Next, I will visit another place also connected to Taira no Masakado.
