The Former Hashirimizu Elementary School and Hashirimizu Spring Water

Hello.

Recently, I visited the former Hashirimizu Elementary School in Yokosuka City to see an exhibition titled “Hashirimizu Water Source 2026.”

Hashirimizu Elementary School, located near the sea, closed in March 2025.

The exhibition featured works inspired by the Hashirimizu water source.

This time, I photographed some of the artworks that caught my attention, along with the atmosphere inside the former school building, and I’d like to share them with you.

The exhibition took place on the third and fourth floors, as well as the rooftop of the school building.

When I entered the sixth-grade, Class 1 classroom on the third floor, I found a single stand placed in the center of the room, with no desks or chairs around it. On top of the stand was a glass bottle filled with water from Hashirimizu.

I really liked how the generous use of empty space made the water itself stand out even more.

The water was provided for visitors to drink freely, so I had a glass myself.

Looking around the classroom brought back memories of the school I attended about 20 years ago.

I also took a photo of the area where the television and other equipment used to be placed.

I remember that at the school I attended, my homeroom teacher’s desk was located around this area.

We often take it for granted that we have access to clean, safe drinking water, but this experience reminded me how grateful I should be for it.

The atmosphere of the classroom also brought back a sense of nostalgia, and I felt deeply moved when I thought about how many years had passed since my school days.

In my next post, I’ll introduce some of the other classrooms and exhibits.

See you in the next post.
