コスモス – Cosmos

こんにちは。

今回は１０月に訪れた「くりはま花の国」で撮影したコスモスと、その由来や記念日についてお話しします。

ここは山に囲まれていて、おそらく季節や時間帯も関係しているため、私が訪れたとき、日当たりの良い場所と日陰になっている場所に分かれていました。

コスモスは目で見ている感じで撮ったとしても、写真で見るととても小さくて、コスモスの良さがわからないんですよね。
とりあえず沢山撮って、後でどのような撮り方が良かったか検証しようと思い、気の向くままに何枚も撮影しました。

暫くは上から撮っていたのですが、花が咲いている正面を撮っているだけでは面白みがないと感じ始めたので、花を下から撮影する方法に変えてみました。

This time, I’m sharing photos of cosmos flowers I took in October at Kurihama Flower Park, along with a little background about the flower’s origin and its commemorative day.

The park is surrounded by mountains, and perhaps because of the season or the time of day, when I visited, some areas were brightly lit while others were in deep shade.

Even when I try to photograph cosmos flowers exactly as I see them, they often appear surprisingly small in the photos, making it hard to capture their charm.
So I decided to take a lot of shots first and later review them to figure out which angles worked best.

For a while, I had been shooting from above, but I started to feel that simply photographing the flowers straight on wasn’t very interesting, so I tried switching to shooting them from below.

こちらはコスモスを下から撮影した写真です。上から撮るよりも、花と同じ高さで撮影するほうが、自然の中で花と一緒にいるような感覚になります。
写真としては少し暗く感じますが、私としてはこのぐらいでも良いと思っています。

This photo was taken from below the cosmos flowers. Compared to shooting from above, photographing the flowers at the same height gives you a feeling of being right there with them in nature.

The image may appear a bit dark, but personally, I think this level of darkness works well.

コスモスの名前は、ギリシャ語の「kosmos（秩序・調和・美しい世界）」が由来です。
花びらが規則正しく並ぶ姿が＂整った美しさ＂を連想させることから、この名がつけられました。
その意味が転じて、花言葉の「調和」や「平和」にもつながっています。

日本では、９月１４日は「コスモスの日」と呼ばれ、パートナー同士が愛を再確認する日とされています。
これはホワイトデー（３月１４日）から半年後の記念日として作られたもので、贈り物にコスモスを添えてパートナーに感謝を伝えることが推奨されています。

撮影以外にも、コスモスの由来や記念日を知ることで、秋の花の見え方が少し変わってくるかもしれません。
身近な花を知るきっかけになればと思います。

The name “cosmos” comes from the Greek word kosmos, meaning “order,” “harmony,” or “a beautiful world.”
Its petals are arranged in a regular, orderly pattern, which evokes a sense of “refined beauty,” and that is how the flower received its name.
This meaning also extends to its flower language, symbolizing “harmony” and “peace.”

In Japan, September 14 is known as “Cosmos Day,” a day for partners to reaffirm their love for each other.
It was established as a commemorative day exactly six months after White Day (March 14).
On this day, people are encouraged to give gifts with cosmos flowers attached as a way of expressing gratitude to their partners.

Beyond photography itself, learning about the origin and meaning of cosmos flowers may change the way you see these autumn blooms.
I hope this gives you a small opportunity to appreciate a familiar flower.
